Galleria Mediterraneo in via Pasitea 236.

Wednesday June 1st at 6.30 PM the Galleria Mediterraneo
Will hold an opening for Peter Ruta, a show of twenty gouaches the ninety-something year old painter completed locally beginning in 2007. Ruta has had a long career as a painter with many shows in the US, Europe and Latin America
The exhibition, curated by Mario Quadraroli, director of the Naturarte project in Lodi, and Enzo Esposito, owner of the Mediterraneo gallery, was presented in Lodi in May of this year.
Ruta’s gouaches are the product of a day or a morning of intense work, to capture the light, atmosphere and architecture of the Amalfi coast with astonishing freshness. It could be his age – he was ninety three in February of this year - and his long experience as a landscape painter, working outdoors, from the motif, in Italy, Spain, Mexico and for twenty years (1981-1999) in New Mexico, that gives him his lively, highly personal style. There is nothing picturesque about these works, little blue, a lot of white, majestic trees, square houses, the landscape reduced, by his analytic and lyric intuition, to an authentic, honest and satisfying vision. To call him a “romantic painter” would not be inaccurate.
A German romantic? Could be. Born in Germany,Ruta came to Italy in 1923 with his father, an early antiNazi. He grew up on the Ligurian coast, in Sta Margherita, Camogli and Chiavari. In 1936 he emigrated to New York, where he studied fresco technique with artist Jean Charlot at the Art Students League. After the war (Ruta is a combat wounded veteran, who fought with the US infantry in the Philippines) he returned to Italy as soon as possible – 1947 – and painted in Rome, Venice, and from 1952, in Positano. In Venice he was a close friend of Peggy Guggenheim. In Positano he remained for ten years, friend and colleague of such painters as Randall Morgan,Kurt Craemer, Han Harloff, Bruno Marquardt and the teachers and students at Edna Lewis’s Positano Art Workshop.
His paintings of those far off years – landscapes, still life, ascetic portraits of Positano women – have been shown in numerous Italian and German galleries in recent years. In October 2010 the Thurnau Museum in Germany opened a large exhibit of Ruta’s 1950s Positano work, to celebrate the tenth year of the popular Thurnau-Positano twin cities program.
A longtime resident of New York City, in 2001 Ruta had a studio on the 9lst floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, where he painted cityscapes, working from morning till sunset every day. Luckily on September 11th he was not in the studio and lost only his last big painting of the urban landscape.
The Positano show will remain open till June 29th 2011 at Galleria
Mediterraneo in via Pasitea 236.
